Scanning Banana Labels

We like to have wonderful pictures of our labels in the catalog. However, it is more important to document a new variant and have at least one acceptable picture than waiting always for better ones. To get wonderful pictures of a label, you should scan them with a scanner and not take a picture with a camera.

The Banana Box Code

When United Fruit Co. first started using labels they generally carried the country of origin. By the 1970's it was increasingly common to see only the Chiquita name, and no reference to place. There were some exceptions, like Ecuador, which had government export regulations requiring the name.

We like to have the catalog complete. Since this can not be guaranteed by a single collector, all collectors are invited to add new stickers. Adding a label is therefore quite simple:

The PLU (Price Look Up) Code

There are about 400 varieties of bananas grown today. The kind you’re most likely to see in your supermarket is the Cavendish. Price Look Up codes went into use in 1990 to identify the type of produce being sold in a grocery story.
